no free lunch
I went to the naked lounge alone last night to study (yeah, right) and read a bit, and of course to have their excellent coffee. Despite the name, everyone in the whole place had their clothes on, and there was quite a crowd. I ordered my coffee, and went to the back room to read because everywhere in the front was already filled up. There was a couple there, who left a few minutes after I arrived, and then a girl sat at the table next to me.
We get to talking somehow, something about the tea she ordered, and she turned out to be really nice. You know that feeling you get, kinda "too" nice? She would always use my name in the sentence. "Sure, David, that's really interesting, David". Well, twenty-five minutes later, I had learned that she is a senior with some liberal studies major from the bay area. Well, the conversation starts to wind down, and then she asks.
"So do you have a lot of free time?" Curious, I reply, that yes, I have a bit here and there. "Well," she continues, "I volunteer at the Boys and Girls club on 6th and Wall St. and we are always looking for people to come and hand out with the kids and fix the computers and stuff".
It was a ploy. I thought I was having an intelligent conversation in a coffee shop with a nice person, a "single serving friend" so to speak. But no. All that was to get me to volunteer at some non-profit organization. Everyone has ulterior motives. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
