hurricane katrina

As with most of America and the world, I have been captivated by Hurricane Katrina for the past few days. I first got interested after it hit Florida and started heading straight for New Orleans. Since then I have been glued to a computer pointed at google news waiting for more updates, watching the blog and webcams from a hosting company in New Orleans, and nearly every news reporting agency out there. The thing that really gets me - and I have come across it quite a bit now that google owns the world - are these adwords. I'm reading about how hundreds of people are dying, 80% of a city of half a million is under water, oil is more than $70 a barrel, and google is shooting me ads for portable shelters and flood insurance?

Katrina and Google

I know, I know, it's just some algorithm that extracts words from the article and serves ads based on the content, but ... I don't want to say it's funny, because it's not, but what else can I say?

I think that those ads are quite helpful, especially for those in the area that still have web access. While they might not be able to help NOW, getting a storm shelter would definately help in the future.

This whole situation sucks, so finding some humor in the google ads is a good thing in light of what's happening.
